A new study shows 48% of Americans older than 12 have at least one online social media profile. That’s doubled since 2008. When you shake out the numbers though, you realize how significant this growth is.

  • 18-24 year olds – 77%
  • 25-34 year olds – 65%
  • 35 – 44 year olds – 51%

Add that to last year’s findings that women over 50 were the fastest growing segment in social media and you see where business is heading. Or you should. And here’s the biggest finding (my opinion) in the whole study:

For the first time, more Americans say the Internet is “most essential” [form of media] to their lives when given a choice along with  television, radio, and newspapers.

Now do you see? If you are a solo professional who is still spending a King’s ransom on yellow page ads, know that you are a dying breed. And know that there are no and low costs ways to have an online presence that really attracts clients to your practice.

Last month Facebook made substantial changes to its Privacy Policy. Since you are interested in getting your practice found in online searches, you need to consider how you can use your Facebook profile to help you. On Monday I’m hosting a call to help you Tweak Your Facebook Privacy Settings to Attract Clients. The sign-up box is over there on your right.

It’s a preview for the Tech Therapy Action Group that begins on January 25th.

On the call we’ll talk about the privacy changes and how you can use your FB profile to showcase your practice. And if you have ever had the “friend a client” dilemma, I’ll show you how you can limit the information that some “friends” see.  As you can see, it’s a very useful call. Go ahead, sign up now.

Many service professionals are concerned that they won’t be able to keep a blog going and use that as a reason not to start a blog. A blog is key to getting your practice found online. You need one if you want your practice to get found in online searches.

Don’t let the fear of running out of ideas stop you from blogging. Here are some tips on what you can do to avoid getting blog block. If you already have a blog, try these 4 tips when you’re stuck:

  • Make a Blog Plan. Get out your calendar and schedule topics. Even if are reading this in June, do it. Consider this an ounce of prevention for the next 12 months.
  • Schedule Writing Time. While you have your calendar out, go ahead an schedule one hour each week to write blog posts. If you can’t find an hour a week to write, how in the world will you serve more clients when you attract them to your practice?
  • Build on Hot Topics. This helps when you are feeling short of ideas. There are two ways I do this – by looking at reader comments and at the keywords people use to find my blog.
  • Read Self-Help Forum Posts. When I’m feeling stuck, one of the things I do is read the self-help forums about divorce.  This lets me know what people are interested in and talking about and gives me ideas for more posts.

If you have blog block, try these 4 tips and let me know how they work for you.

We’ll be discovering other blog strategies in the Tech Action Group that starts on January 25th. This is the group for you if you’re ready to start a blog and develop a social media strategy to get your practice found online.
